Finding Balance
For a time, I used to hate school simply because it took up so much of my life. My schedule consisted of going to school, enduring classes for 7 hours, seeing a teacher for extra help, doing sports after school, and finally going back home only to do homework for another 5-6 hours. It seemed that I had no time for myself, but plenty of time to do the work I felt forced to do. I struggled with this for a while, until my mom gave me great advice to solve this problem: I needed to find an activity to balance my school life.
School can easily become stressful and busy when you don’t give yourself enough time to relax. A lack of relaxation can cause you to become stressed, anxious, sleep-deprived, and even depressed or sad. These emotions can build up to a point where studying is not productive, which will further affect your grades. So, it’s essential to find a hobby, project, or activity that allows you to not only relax, but to focus on something other than school. In doing this, you allow your mind to reset, so that you’re better able to focus on your schoolwork. This will eventually lead to a happier, and mentally healthier version of you.
When finding an activity or hobby, it’s important to find something that gives you true joy. For example, exercise and sketching are constructive activities that give many students fulfillment, and cause them to focus on something other than school. Social media and video games are not the best activities to give you balance because they stimulate your brain to the point where you don’t get the true relaxation your body needs. These hobbies can be hard to find at first. So, try new activities until you find the one that best suits you. If you can’t find a hobby, you can also try a service project. Service projects can help you discover what you love, while allowing you to help others.
Although this solution seems simple, it can be quite difficult to achieve. On certain nights, teachers will assign tests or loads of homework, and you just won’t have the time to balance your day with a hobby. As a diligent student, I completely understand and that’s totally okay. So, the best thing to do is to simply take just 10-15 minutes to do the fun activity that will give you balance. It can be at home before you start your homework or during the school day when you have a few minutes to chill after class. From past experience, I’ve learned that just a few minutes of a fun activity can give you all the joy and fulfillment you need to carry on with the rest of your day.
Finding balance is important for all ages, whether you’re at school, college, or the workplace. Balance can allow us to become happier overall, and will allow you to complete your work successfully. Although it may take a long time to achieve balance, experiencing its reward is worth it in the end.
