The Dwelling Problem

Do you tend to relive moments of the past or negative events? If so, this is called dwelling. Dwelling is a problem that many people face. It involves fixating on negative events and obsessing over your mistakes. But, why is dwelling truly such a bad thing?

The main problem with dwelling is that it causes you to live in the past. Living in the past isn’t truly living. To truly live is to have the ability to move forward. Dwelling leaves you in a constant state of experiencing your failures, which has a huge impact on your self-confidence. If you dwell too much, it can start to affect your physical health. Excessive dwelling can lead to depression, anorexia, weight gain, and chronic stress.

But, not to worry! Dwelling can be overwhelming, but here are some tips to help you fix it:

  1. Distract Yourself - When you feel like you’re dwelling, do something that makes you happy, like a hobby. Listening to music also helps.

  2. Pray or Meditate - Prayer can relieve stress and stop you from obsessing over negative events. Meditation is also an effective way to clear your mind.

  3. Ask Someone For Help (friend, parent, or counselor) - Sometimes, talking to someone about what you are dwelling on can actually help you with your stress. Parents and counselors are very good at offering helpful advice to help you fix your problems.

  4. Forgive Yourself - Accept that you’re human and that you make mistakes.

  5. Make Time to Dwell - Set aside 15-20 minutes to dwell or think about what’s bothering you. But once those minutes are up, you have to swear to yourself that you won’t obsess anymore.
